Northern Ireland Motorways and HQDCs

Our motorway system was constructed largely between 1962, when the first part of the M1 opened, and 1975 when the Sandyknowes-Templepatrick portion of the M2 opened. With the exception of the M1, all motorway schemes were left unfinished when funds were diverted to fund security for the civil disorder that dogged the province in the last 30 years of the 20th century. Later schemes have included the M5 (1980), M3 (1995) and a number of minor junction additions and improvements. Around 2005, NI Roads Service began building some roads to "High Quality Dual Carriageway" standard. These are fully grade separated roads, and may be of motorway standard in every way but name. All of these are listed also. Pages with a have a map of junctions.
